how about a tutorial?

Postby SoaceMunky » 28 Apr 2006 16:33

yeah...the explanation article is useless. it took me a good hour to find the one line "rename your .tar.gz (or .zip) archive with the .vlt extension" which is absurd.
secondly, why are the original skin files zipped into an extensionless file, and then zipped again in to a vlt file? there is nothing in the HOWTO on this.

Yes, the documentation is not perfect, and it is intended to be more a reference than a tutorial.

This part is linked directly from the Table of Contents if you choose the "Compression" section...

What are you talking about? There is no extensionless file anywere. Just zip the directory containing all the files for your skin.

check it out...the skin is called void.
i open the vlt file in winrar, and theres another file in there that has no extension. i double click that and winrar opens another window with all of the files in it :?:

That's what a .tar.gz is all about. You first have a tar file which is more or less a concatenation of all the files, and then the result is compressed with gzip. The file has no extension in winrar because you opened the .vlt file without renaming it to .tar.gz first, but it doesn't really matter...

BTW, with VLC 0.8.5, there is no more need to use .tar.gz anymore, now .zip is supported too.
