You should disable video overlay in the prefs.

Or use VLC snapshot feature in the Video menu.

Hi there,

I installed VLC today and I like what I see so far.

I got allmost the same problem: when I hit the hotkeys I defined under the settins menue to generate a vidcap, the player reacts very slow and playback video starts to glitch. It doesn't show or generate any caps at all when in standby, and only shows the result way after I get of of standby again.

Does anybody know how to get a better reaction from the player?

....alienated.. sort of XD

Postby Mashi » 19 Apr 2006 21:49

So yeah.
I used the screenshot thingy.
It works, but....
When I open my screenshot later, I am an alien.
All the colours are reversed (I am suddenly blue instead of.. well.. pink xD), and I can't change it, I've tried Photoshop, Paint etc. etc.

What the hell is this?!
Please help again :)

Try shutting off the Skip frames option in Video Preferences. You could have a look at the CPU overhead by opening your Task Manager. Shutting off the video overlay shuts down the acceleration of your video card while using VLC.

Color for videos is handled through the Overlay function of your video card. Normal GUI functions (pics etc.) are handled through the color sections of your video card. While you could try changing the format in preferences, I rather doubt it will make a difference.

Snapshot feature?

Postby wakeham » 21 Apr 2006 00:56

Please help. I can't figure out the snapshot feature.
I installed videolan specifically to avoid microsoft media player and real software, which had problems giving me black squares.
I can't turn off graphics accekeration because when I do, no video player works, not even videolan.
I disabled overlay video output under advanced video preference settings.
I selected a directory and an output file type under snapshots on the video preference settings.
When I pause my dvd and hit snapshot, a miniature snapshot of what I want appears in the upper left corner of the screen and then fades away. I can't find any evidence that it was saved anywhere.
If I just hit print screen while the vid is paused, my computer becomes possessed and I've captured something, but it's not wysiwyg and I can't crop or use it in any way.
What am I doing wrong?

Turn back on the Overlay function in Preferences and use ctrl alt s instead. The Video snapshot directory and video snapshot format may be set in Preferences, Video, General video settings. The hot key may also be changed, just be sure it isn't already assigned to something else.

There is nothing difficult about taking a snapshot just press "ctrl alt s" while watching a video. For a slower machine you may need to hold the keys for a moment because of the overhead for your CPU. Pausing the video will make this happen faster and allow for a more accurate capture for slower machines. Starting in 0.8.5 the snapshot shows up in the upper left hand corner when you are in fullscreen mode and then fades away.

The "Video snapshot directory" and "Video snapshot format" may be set in Preferences, Video, General video settings. This provides a way for you to know where the pictures are going so that you can find them and what programs can edit your pictures IE format the pictures are being saved in.

If you used the browse function to set the directory the snapshot must be in the directory you choose. However, If the format is not associated with anything it will not show a picture under windows when looking in the directory. The format may also be changed in Preferences.
