Yes, there are plans, but no concrete works on that yet. Additionally, we aren't really sure if it would be good to do universal binaries because they would be twice as big as our current ones.
The current release got about 50 MB (uncompressed, when installed) by now, so we would end up with about 100 MB and 40 MB for downloads instead of approx. 20 MB.

Since most of our users still got rather slow internet connections, it wouldn't be that wise to do UBs only in the future. Thus, there is the legitimate question if the work to provide UBs is actually worth the time we would have to spend on it.
This question isn't completely decided yet, but it looks like as if we would stick to different releases for each platform for now.

Edit: Just FYI: VLC isn't built using Xcode, but using AutoConf/AutoMake which won't be changed and can't be changed. Thus, this would require quite some hacking of VLC's Makefiles (which would be too worse), but more importantly the configure && make process of about 30 3rd party libraries. None of these libraries offer UB-compatibility at the moment and most of them won't provide this any time soon, so we would have to port these libraries ourselves, before starting to work on VLC.
Thus, re-compiling on both platforms is the best solution, although it requires the user to know whether her Mac uses Intel or PowerPC processors. Since most of users are rather advanced and due to the fact that this info can be found quite easily, this requirement isn't too high IMO.

Audio does not appear to be working for DVD content that I ripped using Handbrake Version 0.7.1 (2006022400). I'm trying to play back in VLC version 0.8.5-test2 SVN revision 15121.

I also experienced the same problem with DVB recorded HD video from a MythTV machine (OTA through pcHDTV HD3000 cards). I can't play this with QuickTime so I am a bit suspicious the file may be missing the audo.

QuickTime will play the mp4 movies from Handbrake with Audio just fine.

Machine is MacBook Pro running 10.4.6. I also had this problem with VLC 0.8.5-test1 and 10.4.4.

Option to switch skins2 is missing and when i set in options to skins2 then next time vlc wont start and i must delete configuration, then i can run vlc again.

I don't know the correct terminology but distorted blocks appear in video using VLC.

Http control is still broken (using the 'control commands'), as in playing a film you can't jump forward to a specific time index anymore.
The last build that worked correctly was vlc-0.8.5-test2-20060407-0000-win32.exe, everything else upto and including vlc-0.8.5-test2-20060411-0001-win32.exe do not work.

The sympton is when you ask vlc over the http interface to jump to a specific time index, say 10mins then it resets the playback to he beginning of the file.

I'm on Windows XP using 0.8.5-test2. I'm trying to stream a capture device over UDP, but that doesn't seem to work. The remote computer connected doesn't show anything. If you stream and try to view locally, nothing comes up as well.

In the web interface, I do think there should be an option to stream the video without local playback. If you're viewing a stream on a remote client, it's easy just to use the web interface to control the player. When you want to open another video and using the web interface, the video played will play locally and will not stream to the client. One would have to use something like VNC to control it to create the streaming settings.

I want to stream tv channels from my Windows XP (0.8.5-test2) to my Linux Ubuntu (0.8.4) laptop, I can see images and they are with a little delay (maybe if I use another decoder I don't have that or set another bitstream) but there is no sound.

In VLC (WinXP) I first could select aux (I use that channel for my tv card) and now I can't select it because I can't see it, only the channels to record audio like MIDI Synth, Cd-digital, Analog mix (Line/CD/Aux/TAD/PC), etc... that's in the properties from the audio device.

I have a bizzarre problem with VLC on WIndows XP.

I used to have version 8.4a working. Then it stopped working.

I re-installed it, it didn'y fix it. I then installed 8.5-test2, and it still doesn't work.

During the installation I checked the delete preferences and caches checkbox.

The menus and GUI behave normally, but it doesn't display the video.
Instead, the bottom line just flickers, seemingly forever.

The bottom line sometimes contains the correct length (when it is .avi
or .wmv). When it is .wmv, it sometimes also changes the size correctly.
But it never actually show anything. The time stays at 0,
and it uses very little CPU.

I tried to play with the settings. They behave ok, but it still does not
display anything.

Other software on the same machine dispplay the same videos without a problem.

Any ideas?

OS X PPC mac mini, 10.4.6

I have a griffin iMic USB "sound card" that i use to play music to the stereo, while the mac's output goes to the computer speakers.

This works in vlc 0.84 if i choose "coreaudio" output and set the coreaudio device number appropriately. vlc is the only macintosh music player that i have found that reliably works playing to this device, all the others i have found only want to play to the system default audio output. (suggestions welcome.)

It stopped working in 0.84a, presumably because "coreaudio" is no longer a choice. I have tried using the "HAL audio" output and setting the output device to number 1 or number 2 (number 2 is what works with 0.84 and coreaudio).

It still doesn't work in 0.85b2, same symptoms.

I saw mention in the release notes of using audio/midi setup and "configure speakers". It seemed like this was only if i wanted to use more than 2 channels, e.g. for surround sound, but i tried anyway. this option is grayed out when i select the iMic.

As an aside, changing the device number in the coreaudio configuration did not seem to take effect until i restarted VLC. I mention this in case there's a related bug in the hal module.

Are there known bugs with choppy playback on some audio types? Seems like mp3s and wav files always work ok but when playing flac it will fade in and out. (this was with .84 - as explained above i haven't upgraded to .84a which supposedly has mac audio fixes...)

Hi guys i have found a little bug in eyetv 0.8.5b2.

When you go under the preference pane -> Interface -> Main Interface -> Mac OS X and then select your external monitor as video peripherial, the fullscreen of the video is not switching on the external monitor unless you choose it again on the video menu. Either the "Black Screen in Fullscreen" (same section) is not working. Hope to help.

OS X 10.4.2

In 0.8.4, my preferences were set to automatically fullscreen video on startup to Screen 2 (Video device 2 in Preferences > Interface > Main interfaces > macosx), the TV connected over S-Video through a receiver. This worked as expected; after launching VLC, any movies that started to play did so in full screen on the TV.

In 0.8.5-test2, video will start fullscreen, but on Screen 1, the computer screen. Looking in the Video menu, Screen 2 is checked, but it obviously didn't start there. I have to reselect Screen 2 from the menu and toggle fullscreen on the running movie before it will display on the TV.

It seems to be the same issue, although I don't know what "Black Screen in Fullscreen" has to do with it.

To further clarify, it only displays on the wrong video device the first time after launching; as long as VLC stays open after performing the workaround, other movies automatically start playing on the TV.

I just tried playing some flacs on my powerbook running 10.4.6 and the 0.85test2. the choppiness still exists. Typically it will play fine for a while but then it will go crazy - it will cut in and out at about a 1/2 second frequency. I am not sure whether it is "pausing" the output during the cut-out or dropping it entirely.

Just to be entirely clear, this is unrelated to the "second device" problem. The powerbook is just using the internal audio. I did experience this problem with the mac mini in the past, though, and ended up writing a wrapper script to first decode flacs to wavs (yuck).
