Redhat 8.5 is pretty old, the Videolan downloads do not even support RedHat
now just Fedora. This page may help you:

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-redhat.html

download the fedora rpm and install with --nodeps option. If that fails you are going to have to search on google for the library files that are missing from your system. FC5 is out now as well, if you can I would upgrade to a newer linux system.

Feroda 4 or 5 where pretty easy. Just install the OS.

then go

# yum install vlc

(it will get you the latest released version)

If you need the latest 0.8.5 - then you need to sync the latest source code from svn and build it. (A lengthy process)
