How to install VideoLan 0.7 on Suse 9

Segmentation fault

This means that the skins plugin wasn't found. No idea why though (maybe you didn't install it or it isn't provided in the rpm packages??).

The crash is a bug in wxWindows. Basically the library doesn't like to be stopped/reinitialized, which is what happened because the skins plugin is not there so vlc tries to restart the wxWindows interface.

I sent a bug report to the wxWindows guys and even provided them with an explanation of what was going on and a work-around fix but they didn't seem interested in fixing this

1) Follow the instructions here and add packman.ie-bremen.de to your installation source. ( http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/16592.html )
2) Search for vlc in software manage and prepare to have most of your SuSE cds ready also.

I had installed a few of the things that the vlc rpm required before I found this method, (such as the libdvdcss package) but I will try it again tomorrow on another PC

(I have been visiting this thread from time to time the past year when I wanted to try SuSE but I think I might stick with it this time now that VLC works. )

I tried to install vlc.

Then I had to install libmad.
And then I installed madplayer.

but I get following error:

*** You must first install libmad before you can build this package.
*** If libmad is already installed, you may need to use the CPPFLAGS
*** environment variable to specify its installed location, e.g. -I<dir>.

What I have to do?
If I would install madplayer without problems, I could easy install vlc.

I installed libmad the following way:
I unpacked it in <user-name>/bin/libmad-0.15.1b/
and entered ./configure

there were no problems
there is a file: mad.h in this dir
but why is there no entry in /lib

how can I configure a package so that there is a entry in /lib

I have successfully installed vlc on my IBM T41 laptop running SuSE pro 9.1. It took a couple of hours, proceeding slowly, but it seems to be straightforward.

I'm told the easiest way is to use YaST. For some reason my YaST is not cooperating, and I did it manually via rpms.

(i) First, go to packman.links2linux.de and find the vlc rpm(s) that correspond to your system. I downloaded

vlc-0.8.2-1.pm.1.i686.rpm
vlc-devel-0.8.2-1.pm.1.i686.rpm
vlc-mozillaplugin-0.8.2-1.pm.1.i686.rpm

and, in addition, the files needed for dependencies:

a52dec-0.7.4-3.pm.1.i686.rpm
faad2-2.0-0.pm.1.i686.rpm

(plus one other--it's on the same page with the vlc and other rpms).

(ii) I installed the a52dec, faad2 and the other dependent bits with the standard rpm command

rpm -i [thepackage].rpm

(iii) Then I tried to install the vlc itself, with the following result:

All of them installed without problems; then I installed vlc and the other two vlc packages, in that order, without problems. I put all the rpms in one directory, which now looks like

i really do not understand what's your problem installing vlc on suse! just use the packman apt repositories and every child can install it for you!

my only problem is with the mozilla-plugin that interferes with opera. once it is installed opera won't launch anymore due to segfault!
