Portable VLC OS X

I'm releasing some OS X portable apps that are applications packaged so you can carry around with you on any portable device, USB thumb drive, iPod, portable hard drive, memory card, other portable device.
I'm working on Portable VLC OS X, is there a way to set the preference .plist file and VLC folder path? For example launching VLC using terminal with some flag/parameters?
