Do you get any other error messages? Does the messages-output (which can be found in the menu "view -> messages") show anything about that (errors, warnings, etc.) just before the crash?

No errors here with Win98SE and VLC 7.1

Problem is under the "settings" drop down, the hilited selections do nothing, they just stick, won't open with the exception of the "preferences" menu if I'm really fast with the pointer.

All works just fine on my notebook running XP-Home. May be the speed of the machine that is the factor. Win98 machine is PII-350 256 ram and Notebook is 2.4 Ghz Intel with 512 ram ... dunno at this point.

not speed

Definately not speed. I'd say something to do with Win98.

I am running VLC perfectly fine on a 200MHz Pentium2 running XP Pro, XP pro uses 10% of CPU constantly VLC uses 0-2% when watching a movie in small screen size.
