Viewing metadata from an audio web stream

I am using VLC as an activex in a VB6 project. All works but can't find out how to extract and display the metadata from web radio station streams ie song now playing etc.
This info is displayed when the VLC media player is connected so i guess there must be a way of accessing this data?
Any help greatfully received.
