I received the following instructions for playing midi files: access vlc settings, navigate to audio setting and specify the downloaded soundfont to use for midi playback.
I can find a place in in audio for downloading the soundfont, or maybe im just not in the right place for settings. I have the latest iteration of vlc and loads of idi files
