VLC not playing Blu-rays correctly

Postby guyburns » 15 Nov 2024 04:31

Problem
Playing a blue-ray folder in VLC works well if the video is ONE FILE. But, I create my own audio-visuals as Blu-ray folders, and they consist of multiple chapters on a timeline. They work perfectly in my Oppo Blu-ray player as a blu-ray folder and as a disk; the disks work perfectly in many other blu-ray players I have played them on, but the blu-ray does not work properly in VLC. The chapters themselves play perfectly, but the change between some chapters does not. VLC briefly reverts to it's own window for less than a second, and then the next chapter comes in.

As far as I know, commercial Blu-rays generally have the main feature as ONE FILE, and the chapters are delineated with markers, so no problem for VLC. But in my case, the audio visual consists of multiple chapters, which are actually multiple m2ts files.

Possible Diagnosis
The faulty playback if my multi-chapter blu-rays is probably caused by the two types of files inside the BDMV package (BDMV > Stream). For a timeline with multiple chapters, the Stream folder contains not only the separate video chapters, but several m2ts files that look like video files (they have the VLC icon), but they are only 98KB each. Obviously they are not video files. Blu-ray players read those 98KB files and do something sensible. VLC reads them, thinks they are video files, doesn't know what to do with them, and briefly flashes back to the VLC window.

Testing
I have tested this on several different OSXs back to Mavericks (2012), through to the latest VLC on the latest Apple laptop. All show the glitches. If someone is interested to investigate this problem, gmail gdburns, and I can upload a short Blu-ray folder with multiple chapters.
