Problems with downloading subtitles

Whenever I try to download subtitles it always says 'Service unavailable, please try again later'. I don't know how to fix this error.

Could you please share some logs? Reproduce the issue and then go to: Settings > Advanced > Debug logs. Then share the logs with the sharing service you prefer (Google Drive, Dropbox, pastebin...).

I am also having this problem Hello I have a problem and hopefully you have an answer. I am no longer able to down load subtitles for video on demand for the last 4 days. I receive a message (service unavailable) when I try to download subs. Prior to 4 days ago I could download subs without an issue. I am using a firestick and using tivimate iptv player with either vlc or mx player which both give the same error message when trying to access subtitles. I have 2 firesticks at different locations both setup the same and both have the same error message when trying to download subs. I can not determine if the fault is with the iptv provider or one of the installed apps. Perhaps you are familiar with this issue and can help resolve this issue.

The issue comes from the service we use (OpenSubtitles). We are looking into it.

Same problem here. XPLAYER for Android works good. They use the same source{Opensubtitles). There is any solution now?
BTW what about some AI subtitles implemented? I think that who will implement this will be really revolutionary

They broke their old API. We are working on implementing the new one, which is neither easy nor quick to do. And it will have some limitations as well.

We're doing our best, but I will be honest: it will take some time and will probably be shipped in the beta.

Ufff... Thank you Aza. Any chance for them to solve the old one? I have to use 3.5.2 version on Chromecast 4k because is the last version that works with OTT TV app.
But it's also strange that XPlayer app still downloads subtitles from Opensubtitles without problems.

I sent them the issue and they responded this morning that now is solved. I checked and it's ok now. Meanwhile I payed for VIP account but that option on NOVA Player was broken too till this morning. Now works both API flawless. VLC & NOVA are the greatest. Thank you guys. Nova Metadata download from TMDB could be a inspiration for new things in VLC. Anyway VLC is The Legend

The API with credentials from Nova works but the API from VLC does not.
Yesterday when I received their email were both good. I checked.
Now, again, in VLC says "Service unavailable".

a quick hello from opensubtitles, we had a few server issues sunday, breaking the opensubtitles.com API, unfortunately one of our sysadmin is on a little holiday this week so small interruptions could still occur.

I just wanna clarify what happens with the opensubtitles.org API.

we didn't shut it down, but limited it to VIP users. Not by greed, but because it uses very old technology that we just can't scale to the full traffic needed for our API.

Currently around 90% of our traffic goes to free users, it takes more than 20 servers to make that running, and we just couldn't do that with the old systems.

So if you have a VIP account, the current VLC version should work fine, if not, sorry you'll have to wait for the upgraded version. It is however possible you get temporary errors, in that case please just try again.

@aza, please reach us if you need help with the migration, we'll be happy to assist you in any way we can.

we love VLC at opensubtitles, love that it's free, and want to keep on providing the subtitles for free - then users can get a VIP if they want to support us, but they don't have to if they don't want to.

As we never (for now!) implemented the login in the Android port of VLC, I fear it won't solve anything for us.

We are currently working on migrating to the new API. See: https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc- ... uests/2017

We plan to improve the support a lot as the implementation was old and not optimal.

I was able to make everything we had work again with the new API on my dev branch. But i will improve the integration furthermore by adding the ability to log in.

I had some API struggles that I will discuss in private with you.

About the timeline: the new integration will be added, at some point, to our 3.6.0 beta round. It's a really bug change and we do not plan to port it to the current 3.5 version.
