How to toggle subtitles with dbus-send?

I am trying to toggle subtitles on and off with dbus-send. I can use dbus-send to pause, seek and set volume, but I cannot find anything about how to toggle subtitles.
I am using an IR-remote to control CVLC on a Raspberry Pi.
If dbus-send cannot be used, is there another way to toggle subtitles?
This was not a problem when I used OMXplayer.

Check the MPRIS specification if you want to control VLC via the session bus.

I do not find anything about toggling subtitles in MPRIS D-Bus Interface Specification. As I mentioned above, this is possible using OMXPlayer and dbus_send. When I migrated from OMXPlayer to VLC, I hoped that dbus_send could control the subtitles in this player too. I hope it will be fixed in the future.

I am using a RPI3+ wihhout X. Could there be another way to control the subtitles from command line?

If you mean the VLC CLI, then there's "strack" IIRC. From the shell, probably no.
