Using VLC with a foreign language program

I am trying to use VLC in connection with learning Japanese. I have converted language lessons on CDs into mp3 files. I then downloaded VLC onto my iphone (version 3.6.4 latest available version in the iStore).
I frequently need to skip backwards for 10 seconds to review a pronunciation or grammar-rule, but there are no skip forwards/skip backwards controls on the VLC app. Is there a workaround for this?
