Native Dark Skin mode

We can use K-Lite Codec Pack and Media player classic. Full of useful features, dark mode etc. I don't get it if every player has dark mode why VLC doesn't.

VLC developers are not entitled to do anything, nor do they care if you leave. This is a free program made by a non-profit. Either contribute code to the project or don't say anything. They are working on it.

Literally how hard is it to implement a dark mode function? They've been saying the same thing for years

VLC uses the third-party Qt framework for the GUI. So actually, it is not a question of hardness. Where Qt supports dark mode on the OS already (and it does, on some OSes), you can configure it in the Qt configuration tool. Elsewhere, you'll have to wait until VLC 4 comes out.

Can you tell us how it's done? I mean, how can we configure Qt so that VLC has an dark theme? I believe that we the users have to do it, because if we wait for the developers I am afraid that we have to wait one more year.

Elsewhere, you'll have to wait until VLC 4 comes out.

By the way, I have downloaded the latest nightly version of VLC 4.0 and there is no option to change the interface to dark theme, I am thinking that the dark theme is not a priority for the team behind VLC.

P.S. When will we see that VLC can display a thumbnail in the progress bar as YouTube and other players do? As shown in the image, courtesy of MPC-BE which does have a dark theme.

It's just another shitty reskin, not a dark theme. It would be great if someone would just inver the UI colors and that's it.

I do not understand why it is not optional, and even by default, because it should be for a video application. When I watch a video in the dark, it makes a white flash when the video ends and switch on the vlc interface.

I know this is probably another topic but that interface in VLC 4 is just plain awful. Why not just keep the old classic design which is simpler? I hate all the new metro stuff. Please change the UI back to pre-3.0

Manjaro, Gnome:

Run app "Qt5 Settings". Select style "Adwaita-Dark" and the default palette. Apply. Reset VLC. You have dark mode. Simultaneously changes Virtualbox, SMPlayer, GParted and perhaps other programs.

Ubuntu, Gnome:

Install this:

sudo apt install qt5ct

Add this line to .profile:

export QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=qt5ct

Log out/in. You can validate setting your environment variable by typing:

echo $QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME

Run program "Qt5 Settings". Select style "Fusion" and custom palette "darker". Apply. Reset VLC. Doesn't look as well as "Adwaita-Dark" in Manjaro, but it it dark.

The new UI in 4.0 has X11/Windows video integration but wayland is still pending. There's still much to do on the UI, and even on the video integration performance though.

Hello, it's 2022 and VLC does not have a "native" (yes native) dark theme? Why do I need to learn and use a different dark theme such as the "eDark" skin which looks completely different and doesn't work properly as to the native regular theme?

Using Windows 10.

I guess this universe is polluted with python clowns and such few quality C/C++ QT devs to actually have free time to make a native dark skin theme.

Same. 4.0 is not the right UI direction in any case. People prefer classic UI's and devs prefer changing things to keep building stuff. Classic needs to be an option for folks.

I beg to disagree with that statement. There are several VLC developers (including myself) who prefer the classic UI.

Supposedly there would be a classic UI mode added, but that would not be the first broken promises surrounding the VLC 4.0 GUI that was merged broken without approval from the developers.

How the hell is a "dark" mode still not a standard feature BY NOW?
The existing VLC code somewhere has values that assign the current colors (they aren't random!)
So logically, isn't is just a matter of changing those values for the current colors --> to --> different values for inverse-appearing colors??

Since some/many/most of us literally never change the light/dark usage anyway, then the devs could just change those values, and make it a separate "Dark" version for full download.
NO other code would even need to be changed at all to add a "switch", or drop-down Light/Dark selector, or whatever.
There would literally be NO other programming needed.

If I knew how to do this I would! One of you coders know how.

I would enjoy a Dark Theme myself, can't wait for that feature. White screens give me such headaches, must lower blue light.
