Set video thumbnail with hotkey

Hi.
VLC can set the current frame as desktop wallpaper.
A feature I would be much more interested in is if I could set the current frame as the video thumbnail, ideally with the option of cropping it first.
Maybe such a function already exists in some plugin, or there is some other app that offers that functionality?
