IPadOS VLC & the ‘Open Subtitles’ download feature

Postby Bazaalad007 » 08 Aug 2024 20:53

Hi,

I recently reset my ipad & thus reinstalled VLC. When I used it today I noticed that subtitles section in the video playing toolbar menu- there was no-longer any option to download from ‘open subtitles’ within the subtitles’ ‘download subtitles’ menu area. In fact, the ‘download subtitles’ feature didn’t seem to work at all & I tested it with some very common movie & tv title examples, each of which, should have easily gained many positive results. The only subtitles feature that worked for me was the ‘load external subtitles’, which of course is a fantastic feature but I just miss the ‘download from open subtitles’ feature, as it was so handy, it was great 👍.

∴ my question is this:

1. Does VLC iiPadOS no-longer have a in-built tool for downloading subtitles from ‘open subtitles’?
2. If it still does have this feature, how do I go about enabling it?

Thank you in advance for any support,
I’d be most grateful.
Kind regards,

There is nothing to be enabled. It should work right-away, however, sometimes there are load balancing issues that prevent it from working. Usually, trying again later helps.

Thanks so much for your reply and assistance.

I’ve tried many many times and finally I was successful. I think what confused me somewhat was that the download subtitles’ feature no-longer expressly states it’s using ‘open subtitles’ like it did previously. I kept waiting for this title to appear and thought because it wasn’t I must have a bug. But that wasn’t the case. Just like you said, as long as I was patient and tried again a few times, it would work.

So thank you very much for your feedback. I’m most grateful ☺️

Nice to hear that it is working for you. Yes, we removed the branding as it didn't look good on small screens as the label text was too long.
