VA-API: option missing from Debian

Postby Vidcomp » 31 May 2024 03:25

When I go to to tools/preferences/input/codec under hardware-accelerated-decoding there is no option for "VA-API:" even though it is set to auto by default making me think VLC is not using my Intel GPU.
Can I determine if VLC 3.0.20 is using my Intel GPU?

Debian has disabled VA support in their VLC package. You need to recompile if you want it.

Debian uses full GPU usage.

How does VLC determine what GPU protocol it is using since it is set to auto be defualt?

VLC tries in the order given by libavcodec.

According to Debian's documentation, "Because FFmpeg was upgraded to the 5.x branch, VLC's VA-API support has been disabled"

Is it true that VLC has disabled VA-API ?

I cannot see any evidence that VLC has not disabled VA-API.

Debian's documentation under 5.2.3

I don't really care if you don't believe me, TBH. That does not change the reality that Debian, by their own admission in their own changelog, disabled VA-API in VLC.

Do you have a site to direct me to to read?

You stated "by their own admission in their changelog"
