VLC on iPhone\iOS shows blank screen but with audio on TV (via AirPlay on Apple TV) since upgraded to iOS13

Hi all

I've been watching videos via VLC installed on my iPhone (iPhone X) casting to my TV via AirPlay on Apple TV.

Since upgraded to iOS13 on my iPhone, when casting via VLC - audio is coming through on my TV but no video.

I've tested YouTube on my iPhone casting to the TV and audio\video coming through.

Audio and Video also coming through when watching via VLC on my iPhone.

Any ideas why video is not showing on TV when casting VLC on iPhone (iOS13) via AirPlay on Apple TV?

FYI VLC on my iPhone was also upgraded to version 3.2.0 2 days ago.

It’s the same for me. Very frustrating. I have been streaming from my iPad onto my smart tv using my Apple TV.

Does it only work on the latest Apple TV. If so I’m not going out to buy a new up to date Apple TV.

I suppose we are stuck watching videos on the computer although I haven’t checked if that works after this new “unimproved” update.

Why couldn’t they have left it alone. It was working fine.

I'm glad I found this forum. I had been using my iPad Air running IOS 12.4.1 running VLC streaming from a dropbox folder though a lightening cable to HDMI converter into my TV and found after the update there was no picture but there was sound. I have been a strong supporter of VLC for years and am hoping this one particular glitch will be addressed asap as a lot of us use our mobil devices to stream videos. Playing them directly from dropbox has poor aspect ratio and color. Hurry up and fix this issue!

I can second this on iPad Pro 2018 running iOS 12.4.1.

I used to be able to Airplay all my videos (to Apple TV 4K) and output them via the USB-C to HDMI-dongle, but now all I get is sound but no picture (picture is black, both through Airplay and HDMI.

Stuck with watching my VLC library on an 11” screen...

Thanks for the reassurances, all I wanted to do was carry on watching films on the TV using the Digital AV adaptor for iPad.

Nothing is working properly since the VLC app was updated.

Oh btw the old VLC app used to automatically put all my TV shows together in separate folders, now they’re all just sprawled across the screen individually.

I use my iPad/iPhones with VLC for teaching. I have them connected to a projector and I can see the files and folders of the videos I use through the projector, but once a video is activated, the screen goes blue. There is still sound, but the image isn’t available through the proctor OR the iPad/iPhone. This is really an inconvenience as it’s the primary way I do my job outside my school.

Found another app that does download from a URL and does cast to TV using AV adaptor. It’s on the App Store and is called iPlayer. Video and Movie player.

Just updated my VLC media player to version 3.2.1 on my iPhone running iOS13.1 - they have fixed the problem.

I only get audio when running vlc on my iPad ios 13.6.1 with Apple play all other video plays correctly

I have this problem......I have an iPad Pro running iPadOS 13.7 with movies saved in a folder I open up with VLC for iOS (3.2.11).
I would also like to watch the films via the Apple TV box connected to my television - but I hear audio and don't get the film showing......is there a fix?????

I have the same Problem.
Using AppleTV, YouTube and Amazon Prime Video via AirPlay works just fine.
Using VLC only displays Filename and uses TV speakers for sound, no Video playback

Device 1:
iPad Pro 10,5 Inch (2017)
iPadOS 14.0.1 (latest version)

VLC for mobile 3.2.12

Device 2:
iPhone 6 (2014)
iOS 12.4.8 (latest version)


VLC for Mobile 3.2.12

TV:
Samsung QE55Q6FN
Firmware: 1300 (latest version)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Found out a quick fix for this problem:

Activate Screen Mirroring in your iDevice Control Centre. Then use VLC as usual.
Video output works just fine then!
Maybe pass the word around if others have the problem!

Well, it’s now November of 2022, on an iPad 6th gen running iOS 16.1 and the same issue is back. I can no longer stream to my tv with audio and video. Only audio makes the trip. Please fix whatever is broken here.

I’ve got the solution! It works with ‘sharing screen’ from the iOS (iPhone) control center. Now I can play and listen my VLC library videos in the Apple TV!

I have a solution for this;

First start “synchronized view” from your Home Screen on iOS. Then proceed to the VLC app and start a video like usual. It will now play with video and sound.

Could you clarify what you mean by synchronized veiw? It doesnt appear to be a term Apple uses, and im getting nothing through search engines on a synchronized view app. As I'd really like to use iOS to stream arbitrary video.

I think they mean Screen Mirroring (accessible from iOS control panel by tapping the icon which looks like two rectangles overlapping)
