Wont play media over SMB

Have been using VLC (3.5.8/616) on Apple TV (17.4/21L227) using SMB to access a disk on an Airport Express.

VLC has worked fabulously for a couple of years -- until about a month ago. Two things occurred, perhaps after a VLC update :

• VLC lost stored credentials for accessing the shared folder and will not remember them.
• Folders can be browsed and files seen, but on attempting to play media VLC is stuck at 'Please wait' with the orange VLC icon and the spinning indicator.

Initially I found that removing/reinstalling VLC will allow the files to be loaded as expected. However after exiting VLC the credentials must be re-entered but the media will not play as above.
Now, even this does not work. The media will not play, credentials will not be stored.
Using VLC (3.4.9/550) on iPad to connect to same disk and files works flawlessly.

Any help or advice appreciated.
