Can VLC convert MP4 video files to DVD for use on any DVD player? And how of course. Many thanks. Pete

The DVD format is very specific, you need to use a dedicated software for doing that.
AVStoDVD is a free and open source one:

PROBLEM SOLVED. Thanks you all for your advice. I followed up the software suggestions but am always wary of installing strange new software. However, I had what they call these days, a 'light bulb' moment. I recall that when I made an sold DVDs I used the Adobe suite of Premiere Pro and with it came ENCORE which makes DVDs. It was still installed and unused for about 10 years. So after many, many false starts and a lot of swearing I have managed to do what is required. Phew.
Again my thanks for all your help and suggestions. Pete
