Memory raising on specific video stream

Postby layer1 » 26 Jan 2024 17:13

When locally streaming from a Panasonic TV (DLNA) via http to VLC on a Windows 10 PC, I see memory raising over time for one specific channel up to 2.5 GB - that's when I prefer to simply restart VLC. With all other TV channels, memory consumption stays low and stable. Looks like the video stream from this sender is broken in some way. The channel name is oe24.TV, but I think that will not help in trouble shooting.

Media Information/Codec shows:
Stream 0: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (h264)
Stream 1: MPEG Audio layer 1/2 (mpga)

This happens on VLC 3.0.20 and 3.0.18, both 64 bit on an up to date Windows 10 pro.

I logged vlc.exe memory state to a csv file, that shows stable memory usage for other TV channels, a drop of memory on stop streaming, and the constant raise in memory for that one bad channel. This is only for a first look at that cause, but if someone wants to dive deeper, I want to provide you with a VLC log file to see what is going on.

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com or on Justpaste.it if it's too long.

Thanks for your answer.

For this test runtime was 10 minutes, memory according to win task-manager:
18 MB: VLC started, idle
65 MB: first visible video frames from stream in question
148 MB: after 10 minutes watching
86 MB: 30 sec after video was stopped

Messages are at pastebin, expires in six months:

148 MB seems normal to me for a 1436 x 830 video.

Yes, my problem is that memory consumption is raising continually over time.
Let me show you a better memory log soon.

Hello,

here is a run over a few hours. A small python script reads memory used by vlc.exe every fife minutes.
The csv table shows time of day, channel and VLC memory used in MB. Windows task-manager shows according values.

Code: Select all

time,channel,memory 04:58:14,oe24.TV HD,161.277 05:03:14,oe24.TV HD,196.406 05:08:14,oe24.TV HD,226.625 05:13:14,oe24.TV HD,255.383 05:18:14,oe24.TV HD,280.578 05:23:14,oe24.TV HD,309.605 05:28:14,oe24.TV HD,338.387 05:33:14,oe24.TV HD,366.871 05:38:14,oe24.TV HD,395.938 05:43:14,oe24.TV HD,425.035 05:48:14,oe24.TV HD,454.102 05:53:14,oe24.TV HD,483.277 05:58:14,oe24.TV HD,512.238 06:03:14,oe24.TV HD,541.211 06:08:14,oe24.TV HD,571.422 06:13:14,oe24.TV HD,600.203 06:18:14,oe24.TV HD,629.141 06:23:14,oe24.TV HD,654.625 06:28:14,oe24.TV HD,683.586 06:33:14,oe24.TV HD,712.293 06:38:14,oe24.TV HD,741.254 06:43:14,oe24.TV HD,770.215 06:48:14,oe24.TV HD,799.176 06:53:14,oe24.TV HD,827.887 06:58:14,oe24.TV HD,857.328 07:03:14,oe24.TV HD,886.289 07:08:14,oe24.TV HD,915.242 07:13:14,oe24.TV HD,943.949 07:18:14,oe24.TV HD,972.848 07:23:14,oe24.TV HD,1002.145 07:28:14,oe24.TV HD,1030.562 07:33:14,oe24.TV HD,1059.609 07:38:14,oe24.TV HD,1088.738 07:43:14,oe24.TV HD,1117.0 07:48:14,oe24.TV HD,1146.637 07:53:14,oe24.TV HD,1175.48 07:58:14,oe24.TV HD,1204.457 08:03:14,oe24.TV HD,1233.418 08:08:14,oe24.TV HD,1262.152 08:13:14,oe24.TV HD,1291.113 08:18:14,oe24.TV HD,1319.992 08:23:14,oe24.TV HD,1348.609 08:28:14,oe24.TV HD,1377.578 08:33:14,oe24.TV HD,1406.871 08:38:14,oe24.TV HD,1435.676 08:43:14,oe24.TV HD,1464.629 08:48:14,oe24.TV HD,1493.594 08:53:14,oe24.TV HD,1522.062 08:58:14,oe24.TV HD,1551.23 09:03:14,oe24.TV HD,1579.719 09:08:14,oe24.TV HD,1608.691 09:13:14,oe24.TV HD,1637.824 09:18:14,oe24.TV HD,1666.789 09:23:14,oe24.TV HD,1695.496 09:28:14,oe24.TV HD,1724.43 09:33:14,oe24.TV HD,1753.738 09:38:14,oe24.TV HD,1782.707 09:43:14,oe24.TV HD,1811.426 09:48:14,oe24.TV HD,1840.391 09:53:14,oe24.TV HD,1869.375 09:58:14,oe24.TV HD,1898.082 10:03:14,oe24.TV HD,1926.801 10:08:14,oe24.TV HD,1955.77 10:13:14,oe24.TV HD,1984.723 10:18:14,oe24.TV HD,2013.684 10:23:14,oe24.TV HD,2042.395 10:28:14,oe24.TV HD,2071.359 10:33:14,oe24.TV HD,2100.32 10:38:14,oe24.TV HD,2129.281 10:43:14,oe24.TV HD,2158.027 10:48:14,oe24.TV HD,2186.742 10:53:14,oe24.TV HD,2215.703 10:58:14,oe24.TV HD,2244.668 11:03:14,oe24.TV HD,2273.355 11:08:14,oe24.TV HD,2302.316 11:13:14,oe24.TV HD,2331.289 11:18:14,oe24.TV HD,2360.25 11:23:14,oe24.TV HD,2388.961 11:28:14,oe24.TV HD,2417.934 11:33:14,oe24.TV HD,2447.242 11:38:14,oe24.TV HD,2476.336 11:43:14,oe24.TV HD,2504.867 11:48:15,oe24.TV HD,2533.965 11:53:15,oe24.TV HD,2563.016

Start at 161 MB, last value 2563 MB.
Memory usage is constantly growing, after seven hours run time we are at 2,5 GB. Win task-manager shows that too.
After stopping the stream memory usage sinks a bit, unfortunately that's not in the csv file (I stopped the script too early).

Yep, 2563 MB is overkill, that smells like a memory leak.
I wonder if it has something to do with the HTTP 406 Error we can see in your log.

You should create a new report ticket on the VLC issues tracker with your above report, the link to your log file and the link to this thread:
https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues

If possible, because of this:

Tested right now, getting the HTTP 406 on three other channels without memory problem.
The issue tracker trouble does not sound very promising, will see what I can do.
I had hoped that posting the issue here would be sufficient, but well lets see.

Nevertheless, thank you for your kind help.
