I Need Hel p with: " The Output File Already Exists. If recording continues..."

Postby Audiophile55 » 20 Jan 2024 04:54

Hi,

I'm new here, and I hope that I can find someone who can help me with a problem in VLC PLayer, if I can.

I am attempting to add audio to a soundless video using VLC Player of a band performing a song.
I was following the intructions on a YouTube video telling how to use VLC Player to perform this task. I do everything they say, which is:

Open VLC PLayer.
Click on Media
Click on Convert and Save in the drop down file
Click on "Add"
Click on Show more options
Click on Play another media synchronously
Click on Convert/Save, etc.

I go through the motions, and as soon as I click on "Start", it takes me to "Converting..." and at this time, a rectangular window pops up on my screen, the directions inside the recatngular window are: "The Output File Already Exists. If the recording continues, the file will be overridden, and its contents will be lost". There are two options to click on inside the rectangular box: "Overwrite" or "Keep Existing File".

I don't know what to do here, next. If I click on "Overwrite" a blue bar starts filling in at the bottom of the VLC Player, looking like the video and audio are now synched and loading, but they're only loading a prtion of the video. I either only get a small portion of the video with the audio I attached, or, I get nothing at all, and then, I can't close the VLC player unless I click on "Overwrite" again, then click on the X at the right, top corner of VLC player. Only then can I close it.

Does ANYONE know what I'm doing wrong? The video time is 9:56. Is this the problem?

Thanks so much.

Steve

You are trying to overwrite an existing file, is what you are doing. VLC does not know that you are okay with that, so it asks; most users are indeed not okay with that.

Also you probably enabled the playlist loop or repeat mode.

Thank you for your helpful response, Mr.Courmont. So what I want to do is click on "Overwrite" so that the sound that goes with the video is written onto the video? Is this correct?I'm not sure whether or not the loop or repeat mode is enabled, and I will definitely check on this as soon as I try making the video again.

Thanks so much!

Steve

Hi all,

I am having the same problem with converting video (mp4) to audio-only (flac).

Please note, that there is no file in outputfolder when starting, means, it also occurs when converting a file for the first time.

  1. After pressing 'start' (start conversion), a file will be put in outputfolder, at times with size 0, at times with 'full size'.
  2. Then an error message appears: "Error. The output file already exists. If recordings continues, the file will be overridden and its content will be lost."
  3. (Re-)pressing either 'overwrite' or 'keep existing file' does not change the behavior and the process seems to loop.
  4. The process can only be ended by taskmanager>processes>vlc>end task.
The error is repeatable with:
  • open vlc
  • menu:media>convert/save file>file selection(drag and drop from folder)
  • convert/save>convert>source=sourcefolder, type=file
  • settings>convert (profile:audio-flac, no further settings to flac, audio only)
  • destination file>browse:outputfolder>filename.flac
  • start
The error appeared last year and now appears again since a few weeks. There seems to be no obvious cause or condition for it and I also do not have a solution yet.

I am using Win10 Pro, vlc 3.0.20 with beginner's settings.

I get this error every time I convert mp4 to mp3
I have to kill the VLC Media Player task to get out of it.

I have the same problem on Linux. I select a file, try to convert it and end with a loop. I have tried to select different output folders, change the name of the output file, change the format and still nothing. VLC crashes to a point that I have to hard kill the laptop with the power button as it brakes my pop_os! to an unusable state.

Edit:

It looks like the 3.0.16 version is broken. I have installed 3.0.20 and the process went fine. I was able to convert it. On is as a flatpak an one probably as .deb from the main repo.

As noted above, you probably enabled the loop or repeat.

No. The loop is deselected and with 3.0.16 it gives an output with a 1.2 kb file and ends in a loop. With 3.0.20 from flatpak it finished OK.

Hi, the loop mode is off for me, still cannot get pass that. You mentioned playlist loop how can I turn that one off?
