VLC keeps opening on wrong screen, no matter what I do

Postby marouncz » 03 Nov 2019 18:59

Hello wveryone,
I would like to use VLC for festival - like use - I have a playlist of short clips I want to play, pause, rewind etc. - I have the video window separate from the vlc controls.
I would like to have the vlc controls on my laptop screen and the video itself play on external display (projector) connected to my laptop. But the problem is, every time VLC loads new clip, the video window opens on my laptop primary screen. Of course, I have set the device for fullscreen playback to \\. \DISPLAY2, but it keep opening on wrong screen.

Is there any way to force VLC to open video output window on second screen and the controls on first screen?

Thanks to everyone for any suggestions!
Marek

Hi,

I guess you've disabled window embedding ?

The win32 window module in vlc 3.0 doesn't support fullscreen setting and the setting in the UI changes only the Qt window module behaviour, so meaning with embedding enabled. There are ongoing discussion to change this behaviour in 4.0 but it's far from being accepted for now.

Hello!
I have struggled with this in VLC 3.0.8 for Windows 10 on my HP laptop and have one possible solution. My goal was to have a playlist of videos on my main laptop and to have the ability to show them in fullscreen on a projector,
I think this is a PC/Windows 10-issue because how it handles extended monitor screens. If you choose Display 2 for fullscreen in preferences/video, the operating system don't know what you mean because it handles both screens together as one!

Do like this: 1. In windows, set your second monitor as extended to the right of your first monitor.
2. In VLC-Tools-Preferences-Video-All settings force the window to open on the right(2nd) monitor by input of x- and y coordinates that is outside the first monitor: Example: My laptop has 1366x768 resolution. I use x=1367 and y=768 to point out the left upper corner of my second display.
And the video can not be in embedded mode also!

This worked for me! Hope it can help!

Correction (sorry!):
Example: My laptop has 1366x768 resolution. I use x=1367 and y=768 to point out the left upper corner of my second display.
I had one digit in the example wrong: y must be less than 768, so it works with y<=767. The screen blows upp to full screen resolution due to the -1 in the settings just over the x- and y coordinates. There will be other digits if you have other resolutions on your screens, the important thing is the point out somewhere to the right of the first monitor! Good luck! /Kenneth

It works for me now. What I did:
(1) TOOLS - PREFERENCES - INTERFACE SETTINGS - (second box in Look and Feel) deselect/disable "Integrate video in interface"
(2) TOOLS - PREFERENCES - (show settings on bottom left corner) ALL - (only show current) select then deselect to collapse all menus - VIDEO - Window Properties - set Video X coordinate to 1920 - set Video Y coordinate to -1

I have 2 1920x1080 screens. For some inexplicable reason, setting Y to -1 is the only thing that makes the X coordinate work for me. For the X coordinate, 0 is the left side of my left screen, and 1920 is the left side of my right screen.

Absolutely brilliant. I have been looking for this solution for years. I screen outdoor movies in summer for our local council, sometimes with subtitles on sometimes with them not on. This aspect has kept me with VLC because no pro software seems to be able to handle subs like VLC does. But the playback control has been painful at times. I'll add a note to the above. It seems if you try some variables of the Y coordinate you do not even need to enter full screen to force the video to show center of the presentation screen. Mine is now set at -200 (X is stable at 1921 one more pixel than the first screen). I have my usual interface on my laptop screen so I can control audio sync and sub sync with I sometimes need to and if I'm trying to get a movie going early I can crank brightness then bring it back down once the evening has darkened. A few more tests to do tomorrow to check if aspect ratio and resolution affects how this performs but I am a very happy camper. I did donate on my last update of VLC and encourage all users to offer a little something to the project because it is amazing!

I have a Windows 11 Desktop running VLC 3.0.20
I also want to have my VLC Playlist and playback controls on monitor 1 while the video is playing fullscreen on Monitor 2
Here's how I accomplished it:

Ctrl+P (or Tools > Preferences) to open the preferences window
Under Interface, uncheck "Integrate video in interface"
Under Video, check "Fullscreen" & "Window Decorations"
On the bottom left, select "Show Settings" All
On the left, scroll down and select "Video"
On the right, scroll down to the "Window properties" section
(This is assuming you are using two 1920x1080 monitors)
Set "Video X coordinate" to 1920
Set "Video Y coordinate" to -1
Save, close and restart VLC

If you are like me and have Monitor 2 to the left of Monitor 1, then set "Video X coordinate" to -1920

Doing this now makes VLC play video full-screen on my 2nd monitor while leaving the playlist and controls on my main monitor.
