VLC captures video but no audio

Postby Harald » 01 Nov 2023 17:25

Hi there, a new guy in this forum I hope I am respecting all the rules. Failing to do so,please tell me how to correct my behavior.
My PC is running Ubuntu 22.04.3.
16GB Ram
Ryzen7

VLC is installed through Synaptic and running in version 3.0.16. The capture device is Haupauge USB-live2.
I am trying to digitise some video tapes. I am getting a video source playing correctly, but no audio.
In september I already digitised some other films with VLC without any problem. Now, after the update to 3.0.16, alas no audio. Needless to say that I have tried snaps version, running via Wine and all kind of settings without success.
Is this a bug in this version?

Thanks for trying to help me.

It should work the same as before.

Thanks Remy. I was of the same opinion. The application convinced me otherwise. I did however get this error: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///home/harald/hw%3A1%2C0'
I assume that this is a temporary file, that never gets created.

Thank you for replying, Remi, it does however not get me any further. Maybe you did not see my edit for the error I saw when trying the various audio channels. The MRL file that cannot be opened, is that the reason for the audio not being 'detected" and consequently captured? I would very much appreciate some help. Sorry for imposing on you.
The tapes are property of an elderly lady who gave them to me in order to get some fond memories back into her life.

Not sure how you ended up using an ALSA device name as a file name, since you didn't explain what you're doing. But that wouldn't have worked in any version.

Hello Rémi,
I opened the capture interface with ctrl+C, chose TV - analogue as the capture mode
Device name: /dev/video2 since this gives me the interface from the VCR
Audioname: HW:1,0; 1,2; 2;0 and 3,0 are available
In the menu the audio device that is selected is "Family 17h (Models00h-0fh) HD Audio Controller Analogue Stereo

MRL: v4l2:///dev/video2
Edit options: v4l2-standard=PAL :input-slave=hw1,0 :live-caching-300
With these settings I pushed <Play>
If you could tell me where I went wrong, please do so. Also if you are looking for another input, please let me know. In any case did I not willingly select an ALSA device. I just accepted the defaults.
