Issue opening HEVC x265 files

Postby Nero905 » 01 Aug 2023 17:29

I have discovered that several videos which are encoded in HEVC x265 can not be opened by VLC, however it is giving me a "filesystem error" saying "(No such file or directory)". For some reason Windows Mediaplayer can open those same files without issue. Is there a way to fix this? This only happens with HEVC x265.

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com or on Justpaste.it if it's too long.

This is the log https://justpaste.it/a80dl. The file can be played with Windows Media Player but not VLC. It happens with other files too, but so far only HEVC x265.

Looks like VLC can access the file but can't parse it.
What is F: ? An USB drive ? A network drive ?
Try to copy your file to a local drive (HDD or SSD) and check if it works or not.

It's an external hdd connected via USB 3. I will try copying the file to the desktop and opening it then. Still I wonder why Windows Media Player has no issues playing the file...

Try to increase the network cache setting.

Menu Tools -> Preferences (Show Settings = ALL) -> Input/Codecs
Then scroll down to Advanced/File Caching on the right panel.

Save, exit and restart VLC for the changes to take effect.

I've tripled all the values in "Advanced/File Caching", but so far the issue remains. However moving the file to the desktop made it playable in VLC. Unfortunately that doesn't really help since I can't move all affected videos to the desktop, they are supposed to stay on the external HDD. If tripling the values is no enough, do you have any suggestion as to how high they should be?

If it works with WMP I see no reason why it doesn't work with VLC.

You should create a new report ticket on the VLC issues tracker with your above report, the links to your sample files and the link to this thread:
https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues

If possible, because of this:

I have new information on this (couldn't create a ticket though because I was unable to sign up), as it turns out the problem lies with file names and/or paths that are too long, renaming files and folders to make the names shorter makes the files playable.
