Browser oddity with icon and names being overlaid

Postby IronRod » 29 Jul 2023 08:44

I stumbled upon this issue when browsing media. Having browsed to contents of a folder, tapping the folder name in the bread crumb at the top, and then tapping the parent folder causes it to overlay file icons with folder icons and the filenames are also overlaid with the names of the items in the parent folder.

Screen recording showing the behavior: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/bbo1crs0 ... d8k5t&dl=0

The phone is Samsung S10+ running Android 12 and VLC 3.5.4 2023-02-20

I reported the same thing in "Breadcrumb display bug" last October; reported that the bug depended on tapping the parent folder quickly; was told it was already tracked in bug #2490, which now claims they fixed it 3 months ago.

Interesting. I confirmed this (3.5.4) is the latest release in Play store (released Feb 20, updated Mar 7) and it's clearly still doing it. For me, it happens every time when I tap the bottom of the breadcrumb then tap an item higher in the trail. It doesn't seem to require being done quickly on my device. Once having opened the lowest level, I can wait several seconds, tap the bottom of the trail, wait a few seconds, then tap higher in the trail and it exhibits the behavior.

Yes, 3.5.4 is the latest; there is nothing in Nightlies claiming to be anything else, and this has been the case since February. Of course I tried to recreate this bug, having been its victim before and having one of the older/slower phones in the user base. Tried again based on your follow-on post; I cannot. In fact, I see it erasing the list for a brief instant before redrawing it—correctly.

Can you specify the steps you take more precisely? What are you tapping to call up the breadcrumb trail in the first place?

The first link in my original post is a screen recording. If you watch that, you can see what I'm tapping. But I'm not doing anything "special"; just tapping "Browse", then tapping my "Music" folder within which all the music media is located. From there, tapping an artist_name folder, then album_name folder. Once there, tap the album_name in the breadcrumb. The screen blinks and the contents of the album are redisplayed. Now, tap on any thing in the breadcrumb higher in the hierarchy; e.g., the artist_name, the "Music" name, etc. and it paints the contents of that folder without clearing the current screen contents.

Sorry; I believe I'm doing the same thing but I can't get it to fail. We must wait for a Developer—who will surely ask you to provide a debug log.

PS—Above, I mentioned "bug #2490, which now claims they fixed it 3 months ago." 3 months ago is more recent than a February version from the Play Store! Please install a Nightly and see if the bug goes away. (Depending on your processor, you may need to go to a sibling directory of this.)
