Deleted files taking up storage, Videos suddenly not playing

Postby valiant07 » 05 May 2023 08:17

Just want to report bugs I've experienced on VLC iOS (Both iPad and iPhone)

01. DELETED VIDEOS STILL TAKING UP SPACE IN IOS STORAGE
This happens if you transfer files from PC to device via USB (iTunes). and delete the files from the app.

This is a known iOS issue, even deleting photos still take up storage.

Solution:
Transfer your files using Sharing via Wifi. If you delete the files transferred via wifi, the storage frees up space immediately.

02. VIDEOS NOT PLAYING WHEN YOU TURN OFF THE DEVICE SCREEN

When you turn off the screen of your device or minimize the app without pressing the close 'X' button and you'll find that once you wake up the device and resume the video, it won't play at all.
Even restarting the app, it still won't play videos.
I've tried both mp4 and mkv files, in h264.

Solution:
Changing hardware decoding from ON to OFF fixes this issue, it's like VLC has stopped using the gpu of the device.

Before putting the device to sleep, press first the close button

Restart the device. You can use hardware decoding again once you restart.

Are you iOS 16.4.1(a) by any chance? I also can’t open any videos since updating.

@SegaMad

Yes. I'm on 16.4.1(a) both iPad and iPhone but I can play videos.

Very strange! Can you play MKV files ok? Just trying to trouble shoot why all of my files are suddenly not playing. Literally all of my library is in MKV format and none are playing!

Mine too! I’ve found a workaround, which is on my other thread:

Basically, my files will now load, but ONLY if I first have the VLC app up and running in the background, then they will open perfectly.

Caveat to that though is that they will now ONLY play on my internal iPad screen. If I hook up to a larger monitor, all I am getting is audio and no picture at all on either screen?!
