Choppy local file playback in 2nd instance when viewing RTSP network stream in 1st instance.

Edit: disabled hardware decoding. that did the trick. disregard!

Hello,

VLC 3.0.18
Windows 10 22h2
Not a new problem just finally getting around to trying to figure it out.

I have a problem when I have a RTSP network stream open in my first instance that playback of local media file, depending on their bit rate, is extremely choppy in a second instance.

I have a local webcam on my network that I watch on a second monitor via RTSP with VLC. The stream playback is fine. However, whenever I try to open local media files above a certain bit rate to watch in another instance of VLC, the playback of that local file is extremely choppy. The playback of the stream remains fine during that period. When I don't have the RTSP stream up, I am able to open many instances of vlc each playing different local media files of large bit rates simultaneously with flawless playback so I do not believe the issue is related to any of limitations of my hardware and is somehow related to specifically to the RTSP network stream. If I close the first instance of VLC displaying the RTSP stream the playback of the local file becomes smooth within a second or two. The media files are on a fast SSD that is not being stressed. Files of bitrate/datarates 3500 kbps play fine, but 7000 kbps do not (It appears the problem begins to manifest when the local file in the second instance approaches 4000 kbps). CPU usage/gpu utilization are also minimal during this choppy playback.

Can anyone enlighten on what might be the issue and suggest a solution? I'd like to be able to leave my RTSP stream up and use another instance of VLC as a media player simultaneously.

Thank you

VLC instances don't really interact with one another. This is probably a bottleneck in the video decoding hardware or the network side.

Thank you Remi. I disabled hardware decoding (which I thought I had done a long time ago), and that fixed the issue.
