Audio track disappears when iPad resumes playback from an auto-lock state

Postby VGuitarist » 06 Feb 2023 05:36

I don't know if this is an iOS issue or a VLC issue, so I'll start here. After a recent update of one of them, my iPad is now dropping the audio track when resuming playback from an auto-lock state. Here are the steps to reproduce the issue:

  • I stream videos from a local DLNA (UPnP) server.
  • Sometimes, I have to pause the video. Within 5 minutes of inactivity, the iPad turns off.
  • When I turn on the iPad, VLC is still opened and paused. I press play to resume the video...audio and video are now playing normally.
  • After 20-30 seconds, the audio goes silent but the video keeps playing. It feels like the audio buffer has emptied.
  • The only way to fix this is to close/reopen VLC and navigate back to the video.

Again, this only happens when the iPad resumes from a sleep state. Pausing/resuming before the iPad sleeps works fine. My VLC build is the latest available in the Apple store (3.3.12 build 447). The recent iOS update didn't fix the issue.

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Audio track disappears when resuming application

Postby VGuitarist » 07 Feb 2023 05:50

Update: the audio track also disappears after switching between apps. Here's what happens:

  • I'm watching a video from my on-network media server...
  • I pause the video and switch to another app (e.g. email client). VLC still running in the background.
  • I switch back to VLC. The video is still visible but paused as expected.
  • I resume the video.
  • The video and audio play, then after 20-30 seconds, the audio track goes silent while the video keeps playing.
So, this has nothing to do with the iPad sleeping as originally reported. Something is causing the audio buffer to empty on resume. Perhaps VLC is not signaling the media server to stream the audio track?

Update: the recent iOS update (16.3.1) has definitely reduced the problem. Since the update, the audio track has only failed once.
