Do you mean only audio media files are playable ?
Do you have sample file to share ?
Can you give more infos like which version of VLC you use and your Mac configuration (macOS version, Mac model, CPU architecture, etc) ?

To help you further, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:

1. Have VLC app in foreground
2. Open Messages window by going to application's menu Window -> Messages... or do keyboard shortcut cmd+shift+M
3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
4. Select all messages text in Messages window and copy them into clipboard with cmd+C
5. Paste the full resulting log here with cmd+V between [​code] and[​/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)

Indeed, when I open VLC, all I can do is import some music to listen to it.
There is no question of "messages"???
What do you call "application's menu Window"???

I also need help, didn't want to start a new topic and block up the site, I am on MacBook Pro Catalina, have installed VLC in guest user, I click open and it just appears in menu bar, won't open. I have turned off Avast in case that was the issue. MacBook I don't know if can run as administrator, how to, if required, can't tell you what version of VLC as I can't open it, although installed maybe a week ago from the VLC website, any tips or advice?
