"SMBv1 Authentication Required"

Postby greenzi » 30 Oct 2022 14:06

Hi -

I cannot play any file off my Mac Mini due to this "SMBv1 Authentication Required" message from VLC (in fact no machine on my home network can be connected for the same reason even though I dont use them to stream files. I cannot overcome this and therefore VLC is completely useless now for playing movies over network.

I also do not understand what the message means: "Please provide a username (ideally a domain name using the format DOMAIN;username) and a password." Domain? What domain? This is my local network? (If I turn off VLC Settings switch saying "Prefer SMB 1" then exactly same problem except it says "SMB" not "SMBv1")

I have used Mac Mini admin account name and password, dialog clears and repeats. I have tried IP address and password, same. I have tried 'smb://192.168.0.110' and password, same response. I have tried 'mcmini.local' and password but same response. Tried: 192.168.0.110\mcmini and password, same. Tried other variations I cannot even remember now. I have no idea what the "DOMAIN;username" format is or how it should look. There is a similar question in the forum but they started with a "TRUENAS" share, which I would imagine is not too different. But no resolution there either.

What exactly am I supposed to do here? My iPad Files app is quite happy accessing the Mac Mini files of the same HD. But VLC will not work, now I have to physically copy a file to the iPad first to play in VLC which just seems totally backward.

So how do I access files for streaming off my Mac Mini HD?

Thanks for any help!
