VLC Media Player for SLE15SP4 ?

Postby DAV » 28 Sep 2022 18:22

Greetings,

I can check @ https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-suse.html that VLC Media Player runs on SLE15SP2 (SuSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP2).

I try to run it on SLE15SP4 but it does not work. YaST complains about missing libaa.so.1()(64-bit).

Did someone reached installing VLC Media Player on SLE15SP4 and how please ?

Any answer will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot by now.

I'm not familiar with suse, but isn't VLC already provided directly by your distribution?

Greetings chubinou,
Thanks a lot for your answer. Much appreciated.
You are right but if I try to install this package, then I get from SLED 15 SP4:

Problem: nothing provides 'libaa.so.1()(64bit)' needed by the to be installed vlc-3.0.17.3-bp154.1.49.x86_64
Solution 1: do not install vlc-3.0.17.3-bp154.1.49.x86_64
Solution 2: break vlc-3.0.17.3-bp154.1.49.x86_64 by ignoring some of its dependencies

SuSE Support tells me that there is somewhere a licensing problem but I just do not want to discard VLC Media Player which is a real great software.

Thanks a lot by now if you have a good trick to bypass the problem.
Have a nice and safe day.
Eric

Hello Dav,

First of all, I am not a SLED User.
Please keep that in mind when I provide some solutions.
I use openSUSE Tumbleweed and Leap 15.4 and in both distributions vlc comes with the packages.
I personally do not understand why SLED cannot provide libaa but in your case, we have to deal with it.

My first attempt, if I were in your situation, would be to try the SLED15SP3 backported package: https://software.opensuse.org/download/ ... SLE-15-SP3

Click on that link and install the RPM manually and then try to install VLC.

I hope this helps. If not, you can paste your output here.

Update: Why you didn't use the flatpak? https://flathub.org/apps/details/org.videolan.VLC

best regards,

Michael

Hello Michael,
Thanks a lot for your time and answer.
After investigating, I realized that the problem is in SLED 15 SP4 and I opened a problem at SuSE Team. There is obviously a lack of support for audio and video files in SLED 15 SP4.
I hope they will find a clue since it is very annoying.
I will come back here as soon as I have a clue for this problem.
Have a nice and safe week-end.
Eric
