Record audio along with the VLC desktop recording feature?

What would the options be to record audio when recording a desktop with VLC? With the desktop recording feature choosing to stream "original audio" results in no sound and no codec generated for the client. WIth desktop recording choosing to stream MP3 results in "late buffer for mux input" on the computer doing the recording and no sound and no codec generated for the client. Failing that, on Windows choosing directshow instead causes the error "VLC can not open ANY capture device" on the computer doing the recording. How could I move forward here?
