current mac os and current vlc unable to convert mkv to mp4

Hello!
First ever posting....I do not have same screen shots as most tutorials so here is my issue
able to select file (mkv format) and ask to save as codec MP3/MP4 but when I click process it automatically calls file mkv extension.
no ability to navigate extensions or self input
how do I save MKV to MP4 to work on AppleTV (I have the actual box and program) as if not mp4 it will not recognize file to play

I am having a very similar problem, did you manage to find a solution?

My situation...
I have several screen recordings in .mov format (captured with QuickTime Player) that I would like to convert to .mp4.

In theory, this should be very simple to do using the Convert/Stream feature but when I select MP4 as the conversion profile, then select a destination file to save the stream to, the file format set by. VLC is .m4v instead of .mp4

So I have the same question, how to get VLC to convert an existing file to MP4 format?

Edit: I am running...
macOS Monterey (12.5.1) on MacBook Pro with Intel CPU
VLC Media Player v3.0.17.3 Vetinari (Intel 64-bit)
