VLC freezes picture very often

My VLC 3.0.17.3 has suddenly begun to freeze - it started about a month ago. I have reinstalled the programme, updated mac to Monterey, and nothing has helped. I have just watched to avi files, one 40 minutes, one 46 minutes - the picture stopped 69 times in 40 minutes - 33 times the first 10 minutes ... the next one was a little better - only 47 stops in 46 minutes. I use a mac mini from 2014 - I might need a new one, but it is fully updated, and I have never had any proplems like this before. Does anyone have the same experience and can give me a few tips on what to do? Thank you very much.
