Are .zip VLC nigthties, a portable application?

Hi, I would like to know if .zip VLC nightlies (https://nightlies.videolan.org) are portable application ?
With portable, I mean no impact on the Windows it is running on: no registry modification, no file associations, no files being left

No, they are just versions without an installer but the %APPDATA% user folder will be used by default.
For making VLC portable extract the archive to the folder of your choice, then create a folder named "portable" (without quotes) where VLC.exe is.
Done.

Thanks for you reply. With the 'portable' folder created in VLC v4, where do preferences go instead of %appdata%/vlc ?

I have downloaded the latest night (from 08.08.2022) of vlc v4.0 and created the portable folder where VLC.exe is located.
But when I launch vlc.exe , nothing is happening: the vlc.exe process is running but no videolan window is starting, even after a few minutes

There are other reports saying that the nigthly builds might actually be broken for some days:

But since it's summer time and holidays it may take a while before something will be done. Just use one older version, like one from the end of july.

I have installed the lasted version of July and now it works
There are no stages between VLC v3 stable and VLC v4 nightlies ? I surprise you do not need to have monthly stable version of something like that?
