VLC Freezes After Long Pause

Postby Peter023 » 29 Jul 2022 05:56

When you've paused a video for a significant period of time, it sometimes takes several seconds for it to start to play after pushing the play button and more often has a somewhat scrambled picture that takes a few seconds to resolve. I'm running Windows 10 and everything is up to date. Does anyone have any ideas? The scrambled picture is particularly surprising.

Are the decomptession artifacts from resume until the first keyframe, or from the first keyframe until the second one?

Best guess: in the first case, the reference pictures were discarded from memory by the GPU drivers either for saving power or for another application to use the GPU. In the second case, the CPU or GPU may be in slow low-power state leaving insufficient computational resources to decode the video in real time (until fast high-power mode kicks back in).

Hi and thanks for replying. Unfortunately, I don't know what decompression artifacts are.

Neither of your explanations would seem to imply a way to correct the problem, is that correct?
