Subtitles not auto-enabled

Postby arvipat » 20 Jul 2022 17:16

I have the latest, updated VLC player. OS: Win 11 64-bit (latest updated).
Subtitles are not being auto-loaded - I have to select them every time I start playing a video.

Hit Ctrl + P to open preferences and click the Subtitles / OSD button at the top and make sure "Enable subtitles" is already checkmarked. If it isn't click the setting and then click Save and then exit and restart vlc.

If it's already checkmarked reset preferences and then check again: https://wiki.videolan.org/VSG:ResetPrefs

Embedded or external subtitles ?
If embedded subtitles then check if your subtitles language preferences matches with the language of the subtitles of your file:

Embedded or external subtitles? - both
Language preference (English) matches. Subtitles not auto-enabled whether only English one embedded or more than one (in addition to English) language embedded.

What kind of video and subtitles files ? MP4 ? MKV ? SRT ? SUB ? etc...

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

So we talk about external subtitles.

If my memories are good, srt file should be place in the same folder than the mkv file and should have the same name

No, you need to give us the URL you got from Pastebin.

And please upload a short sample of your original problematic file to Zippyshare.com or to WeTransfer.com and then post the link to the file here.
https://www.zippyshare.com
https://wetransfer.com

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 35#p193335
200 MB max should be enough.

This is about an MKV file and the MKV container is using flags for forced and default subtitles.
I'm not sure subtitles with the default flag should be displayed by...default :)
With VLC I guess it depends on the language settings, as said before, but we can see in your log that the subtitles track of your file has no defined language (und).
Maybe a dev will clarify that.
