Getting crashes with VLC on HDMI 24bit 192,000Hz

Postby SlipperyWheel » 19 Jun 2022 17:44

So I'm getting these crashes when I play some videos only with VLC player, but not with other players:

A fatal hardware error has occurred.

Reported by component: Processor Core
Error Source: Machine Check Exception
Error Type: Cache Hierarchy Error
Processor APIC ID: 14

I don't get crashes using an optical audio connection, or with HDMI 24bit 96,000Hz, it's only with VLC on 24bit 192,000Hz.

Of course it could be a driver issue, or a Windows issue, but if this was the case I think I'd be getting crashes in other applications too. It happens on VLC version 3.0.15 and 3.0.16 (haven't checked any other versions) and I have reset my VLC preferences so I don't think it's a weird settings issue.
I only switched to 24bit 192,000Hz last week, and I constantly get VLC crashes with it. But last year I could run 192,000Hz without any issues.

Could it be a glitch with VLC or a conflict with Windows settings and/or with my graphics drivers?

MCE are hardware problem reports. In theory, could be a driver issue reporting a bogus MCE... but most likely, it is a real hardware failure.

Seems to be a common problem on the AMD forum

If your CPU is also an AMD type I would suggest following the AMD Community Manager's suggestion (first post) to see if it helps.
