Streaming from External Media Drive

Postby Klaatu » 07 Jun 2022 01:48

I’m using a MacMini with an external media drive. I’m trying to access videos on the media drive; I can get to the drive, but then I get this dialog:

SMBv1 authentication required The computer (MAC-MINI) you are trying to connect to requires authentication. Please provide a username (ideally a domain name using the format DOMAIN;username) and a password.

The MacMini is password protected (but it doesn’t work in this dialog); the external drive isn’t protected. What is this dialog asking for or how do I get rid of it so that I can use VLC to stream from the media drive?

Thank you very much for any help.

Can you mount the external drive in Finder and open your files from there?

If I understand your question -- yes, I can open the Media drive with Finder, and I can play videos from the using VLC Media on my Mac. But when I try to access the Media with VLC on Apple TV4, I get a dialog saying the External drive needs to be "authenticated" and asks for a password and login. The media drive does NOT have a password/login, so I don't know what VLC is asking for?

The authentication request has to do with SMB V1 -- can the SMB requirement be removed?

Much thanx.

What happens if you click "anonymous" login on Apple TV?

I apologize for being so late to reply. I've just had knee replacement surgery (one down and one to go) and the recovery process is very demanding -- time and energy.

If I click on the Anonymous login, I get the same dialog:

"SMB V1 Authentication Required
The computer (MACMINI-88F0CD) you are trying to connect requires
authentication.
Please provide a username (ideally a domain name using the format
DOMAIN;username) and a password."

Also, I must have set up my account wrong because I do NOT get notices that someone has posted a reply -- can you help me with that issue, too?

Thank you very much, Michael

I think I've solve the problem --- I carefully and thoroughly went through all the settings on my Mac that effect or could effect accessing the external drive with VLC, and with those changes I was able to access the Media Drive with an Anonymous login.

Please, I am having the same issue. I am using it on my Firestick with no problems. All of a sudden it is asking for authentication. What did you do? I am also on a Mac. Pleas and thank you.
