On opening BluRay, VLC either won't detect Java or crash when detecting it

Postby PierU » 29 May 2022 09:21

Hello,

On Win10, I am trying to read BluRays with VLC and MakeMKV installed. I have updated to the latest versions of both (64 bits version for VLC, 32 version for MakeMKV).

At first I could play the BluRay, but without any menu as Java was not installed.

I installed Java 8 32 bits from java.com. I actually followed the whole procedure from this page : https://stolafcarleton.teamdynamix.com/ ... ?ID=128854 . But still VLC was saying that it couldn't find any Java installed.

Then I removed the 32 bits Java version and installed the 64 bits one (still Java 8 ). Now VLC is crashing when opening the BluRay... At least it shows that it detects Java...

Any Idea ?

Most commercially available blu-ray discs are encrypted to prevent copying. VLC can't play these without installing proprietary libraries which are not free. Since vlc is free software these kind of libraries are not included.

However, all is not lost. Go to this site and follow the instructions to install open source libraries instead. There's no guarantee that they will work, but it's worth a try: https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=176924

The decryption is not the problem here, it's the menus. Thanks to MakeMKV and its VLC integration, VLC can effectively decrypt and play the BluRay, but basically without the menus of the disc. Playing with the menus require Java, and at the moment I can't get Java working with VLC.

Here is the VLC log file when it crashes :

There is a problem with latest Java update:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=159727
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=159876

Looks like it should work with Jre-8u321.

It works with Jre-8u321 (64 bits, I didn't try the 32 version), thanks !!

I came across this problem when first installing java which was the current version 341 while VLC was version 3.0.12. In attempt to fix I updated VLC to current 3.0.17 but that didn't help. Finally got version 3.0.18-rc which does the job.
