PGS subtitles incorrect aspect ratio on 4:3 video

PGS/sup blu ray subtitles display as expected on a 16:9 video, but are stretched too thin on 4:3 (as if VLC expects the video to be 16:9 and shrinks them to 4:3). If I use "crop to 16:9" on a 4:3 video the subtitles look scaled perfectly. VLC for ipad 3.3.3

and what is the AR the 4:3 video with the distorted subtitles should be shown in? Is it 4:3 content or is the video distorted as well and should be rendered at 16:9 instead?

Of course it is 4:3 content. PAR is also 1:1.
