H265 Error Message

New user here. I have a security camera NVR (Smonet brand) running under Eseecloud). For the first time, I need to play back a saved video recording. Everyone I asked told me VLC was the way to go. I dragged the file (AVI format, 2.65GB) into VLC. When I try to play it I get the following error message: "Codec not supported VLC could not decode the format "X265" (No description for this codec)". Can someone tell a neophyte what this means and what I should due to figure out how to play this video? Google tells me a codec is a compression technology but beyond that, I don't have a clue! (I am not a developer, coder, etc., etc., just someone who needs to play a video. Thanks, Bill

Is this with VLC 3.0.16?

Yes - Version 3.0.16 Vetinari (Intel 64bit) on an iMac (Monterey)

(In looking at the VLC Version it occurs. to me that I am actually on an M1 (Apple) chip and not Intel. Perhaps I need a different version of VLC.)

No, VLC works the same on Intel and M1. This is a bug

Your uploader has a 1GB limit. My file is 2.65GB. I can send it to an email address using WeTransfer if that works for you. (They'll send you a link to download the file. No need to create an account.)

Maybe you can do a smaller sample? 100MB should be enough.
