VLC crashes on startup: OSX 12.0.1

Attempting to open the application causes the program to immediately display an error message on startup, and any attempts to reopen the application results in the same error message. A clean re-install failed to remedy the problem

My MacBook is brand new, but it seems like this is not the only application having difficulties opening.
