In addition to my previous post: I have found a workaround which might work for other people as well.
It is possible to configure the shares on Windows and allow anonymous access.
Then, disable the "Preferred SMB v1" checkbox, so VLC Player will not prompt you for credentials.
If the share does connect, but you get the "No Media Files" error, you probably need to edit the NTFS permissions in Windows.
In my case, I had granted read-access to EveryOne on the share, but NTFS-permissions on the map itself were insufficient.
After granting NTFS read permission on the shared map itself (right click with mouse on map, select Properties, tab Security). it worked perfectly.
