Capturing Audio in Realtime with or without Video

Postby Chris Kelly » 06 Dec 2021 06:47

I have a Yamaha AG-03 USB audio interface. I installed its driver and set its sampling rate to 192 KHz. Its bits-per-sample only has a 24-bit option. However, when using VLC to capture raw audio in realtime with or without video, as I play from the capture, it shows a raw audio codec of 16-bit, 44,100 Hz. How can I get VLC to capture raw audio at 24-bit, 192 KHz? Would the VLC settings I should manage be in the Audio > Output Modules > File section, the Input / Codecs > Access Modules > DirectShow section, or the Input / Codecs > Demuxers > Raw Audio section? I am sight impared and cannot use a tablet or smartphone to use the Videolan support tracker outside this forum.

In the DirectShow menu click the "Advanced options" button and then scroll down to the bottom. You can set bit rate and sample rate in there.

However, the source needs to be hi-res and there aren't any free-to-air stations which broadcast in that format AFAIA.

On the other hand there are a number of premium options such as those listed on the digitaltrends site, but they're expensive.

The What HiFi site is worth a read regarding hi-res audio which perhaps will give you a better understanding of the subject.

I tried the Input / Codecs > Access Modules > DirectShow settings. Any sampling rate and bits-per-sample value other than 0, whether entering the value in Hz (192000) or KHz (192) results in an error saying that the format isn't supported by my Yamaha AG-03 USB audio interface, even though my Yamaha AG-03 USB audio interface is compatible with various sampling rates from 44.1 KHz - 192 KHz, or 441000 Hz - 192000 Hz at 24 bits per sample.

Are you sure the OS is not restricting it to 16-bit/44.1? Check by right clicking the speaker icon in the systray and go to "Playback devices".
Click the Speakers menu ---> Properties button and then Click the Advanced tab. You can set it to 24-bit / 192000 in there. There's also a test button in there.

The driver for my Yamaha moves the sampling rate and bits-per-sample setting to its own control panel, and I have that set to 192/24.

I notice from your post on the Blu-Ray support sticky that you updated to Windows 10 21H1 on May 19. Did you also update the USB driver to the Windows 10 version? In that respect I noticed on their support page that an exclusief Windows 10 driver was released on 25 September last year.

Actually, I'm on Windows 11, with version 2.0.4 of the Yamaha driver.

Windows 11 hasn't been officially released yet, but maybe try a nightly, possibly version 4.0 to see if it helps: https://nightlies.videolan.org/

It might also be a good idea to contact Yamaha support and determine if they have a Win11 driver available.
