BIG .ogg files, delay in play start (curious)

Postby AnyHog » 19 Oct 2021 18:44

Android 9, VLC stable of 15 October 2021.

I have several large ( even > 20h ) .ogg files.

Short ones, and long .mp3's start playing immediately.

Long .ogg's take a few seconds per hour lenght to start and to go through big time jumps.

After that, reproduction is stable.

Issue seems to be related to current version only.

Not a show stopper esp. considering big files are for ambience only. But I'm curious as to the mechanics!

Do you have samples to share?

Thank you! Here are some examples, all .ogg and large:

I can't make head or tail of it, sometimes they start right away, sometimes after a 1s wait, sometimes play fails and the song name banner closes, sometimes about 1s wait per hour (total, or to position). Starting from a playlist ("next song") seems more reliable, I can't tell if clearing cache and history makes a difference. On another phone (Android 8, VLC 2021-01-20) same files, no delays.

While waiting for a reply: You say you have no delays on the other phone. But there are two differences: older Android 8 AND the January VLC. I'm curious to see if the delays occur if you install the VLC of 15-Oct that is giving you problems on your Android 9. Always "Change one variable at a time." Cheers!

To add to what Spike said, even if all things software-wise were to be the same, hardware differences between the devices (free RAM, caching, processor speed, storage device speed etc.) would surely affect playback of such large files too.

I just tried with your files and was unabled to reproduce the issue. Could you please share some logs?

Reproduce the issue and then go to: Settings > Advanced > Debug logs. Then share the logs with the sharing service you prefer (Google Drive, Dropbox, pastebin...).

Here's a log!

A good mix of things happened.

Some big files refused to play, others started with a long delay (10s of s) or a brief delay (1s), others yet started instantly.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Cs9 ... p=drivesdk

.At other times all files play, albeit with a possible delay.

(How can a codec become _intermittently_ unavailable?!? 🤔 )

If that's about seeking delay, that's expected and only depends on device latency.

Ogg is a streaming format and is not designed for random access.
