Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of your original problematic file to Zippyshare.com or to WeTransfer.com and then post the link to the file here.
https://www.zippyshare.com
https://wetransfer.com

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 35#p193335
200 MB max should be enough.

log at
https://pastebin.com/xfkL18pP

I'm pretty good at following instructions, but couldn't get the splitter to work. Nothing appeared in the target directory. See
https://www71.zippyshare.com/v/S3o6uKJT/file.html

It should work. In DGsplit, you need to tick the option "Stop after x chunk(s) written". Set it to 1 chunk.

That said, it looks like VLc is trying to open some subtitles file. So I wonder if there are embedded subtitles or an external file in the same folder as the video file.

My image at zippyshare shows that I did check "stop after" "1chunk" I also specified the path for the result.
Source file:
G:\Confessions of a Nazi spy [1839]\Confessions of a Nazi spy [1839].avi
Destination directory and file name pref‌ix:
G:\Confessions of a Nazi spy [1939]\vlc.avi
If your destination file name is xyz.abc, your split files will be xyz__0.abc, xyz_1.abc, xyz_2.abc,
I ocr'ed the image to get the above information, so there might be errors I didn't catch and correct.
That last line is confusing: the third line asks for "file name pref‌ix" and the last line shows prefix and suffix.
This is the error message:
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///G:/Confessions%20of%20a%20Nazi%20spy%20%281939%29/Confessions%20of%20a%20Nazi%20spy%20%281939%29.avi'. Check the log for details.
There is an external srt, so I gave it a phoney extension so it wouldn't be recognized as an srt. Still wouldn't play. In addition, the subtitles didn't display on my Debian machine, even though the srt file has proper extension. No internal subs.

I tried to indent these lines with spaces, but the spaces were filtered out.

Only xyz__0.abc if you have used "Stop after 1 chunk(s) written". And that's the file I want.

But
This is the error message:
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///G:/Confessions%20of%20a%20Nazi%20spy%20%281939%29/Confessions%20of%20a%20Nazi%20spy%20%281939%29.avi'. Check the log for details.

VLC can't access your file. That sounds like an access rights issue.

"Only xyz__0.abc if you have used 'Stop after 1 chunk(s) written'." I did use 'Stop after 1 chunk(s) written'.*
"And that's the file I want." No additional files were created in my destination directory.
"That sounds like an access rights issue." I'm not aware that I granted any special access rights in my Debian machine.
*ImageI can't figure out how to attach an image. I get underline, italics, but I don't get img. What do I put between "{img}" and "{/img}", except with square instead of curly brackets?

So no file at all has been created by the splitter ? Then it looks like the splitter can't access the file either.
I'm not talking about Debian but Windows. And it looks like your Windows system doesn't have the full rights to access this file or folder or drive.

An URL:

Code: Select all

Bandicut does not support these files.
[There is no video or codec information.)
You can see file information. G:\Confessions of a Nazi spy (1939]\Confessions of a Nazi spy (1939].avi
-Video Codec: None
-Audio Codec: None
- File Format: AVI

Seems strange that it plays fine on the linux version of vlc.

For testing purposes, copy the file to another drive and try again.

I don't understand what is going on. Maybe the final bracket is the problem.
Try to give the file a simplier name (e.g.: Spy.avi) and try again.

BTW you don't need to use OCR which is giving a broken chain, just do a simple copy and paste from the Errors box ;)

I can live with mysteries. Copied to my desktop, renamed it spy.avi, still won't play. Thanks for the attention you paid to this, wish I coulda been more helpful. I have limited skills.
