VLC history streaming from QNAP NAS UPnP on Sony AF9 TV

Postby EasterEEL » 30 Jan 2021 12:03

When I stream video from my QNAP NAS using UPnP to the VLC app on my Sony AF9 (android o/s) TV the video file name is not shown in the history. What I see is stuff like:

x-matroska,pn=,ext=.mkv
or
mp4,pn=AVC_MP4_HP_HD_AAC,ext=.mp4

If I copy the same video files and play from a USB stick attached to the TV the VLC history shows the file names correctly.

The video file names all display correctly apart from in history. Is this a known problem; any chance of a fix?

Oh dear, just realised this is a much bigger problem than I originally thought.

The history file (title) name problem I mentioned above I have always noticed since installing VLC on my TV about six months ago.

Now I have noticed the same problem with video file/title names when browsing my NAS. They display correctly until they are played and exited, at which time the file/title name changes to x-matroska,pn=,ext=.mkv and then re-sorts and lists alphanumerically under X. So play 10 .mkv files and they all then list under X with the same file/title name. This a new problem since the VLC app updated to revision 13e15aa9d VLC: 38efa6451 (2021-01-20) 3.3.4.

Unfortunately this renders VLC unusable on my TV at present so I've had to temporarily switch to an alternative DLNA video app which does not have this problem (Nova Video Player). I've used VLC on a PC for years and it is a great app and did work well on my Android TV so hopefully this can fixed with next update.

Thx for the link (which I think is describing the same problem), I will check on progress from time to time.

Oh NO. Just downloaded VLC 3.4 beta on my Sony TV from Google Play Store and it has exactly the same problem as 3.3.4 causing VLC to gradually become unusable with a NAS as played file names all become the same unintelligible name .

Iv'e been patiently waiting since January 2021 for VLC 3.4 which I sort of thought would provide the fix. This is a blow for all of us hoping for a fix.

You're right. There is a regression. I'll take a look.
