VLC 3.0.12 - HDR Colors Washed Out

Postby vash2 » 08 May 2021 14:59

HDR content can't be played well on macOS Mojave (10.14.6) in VLC 3.0.12. Even the content itself plays smoothly, but the colors look gray, dull, and washed out.

If I understand correctly HDR to SDR color mapping doesn't work well.

Are there any settings I can change in VLC to fix this problem? Maybe upgrading OS to Big Sur could help?

I read a few topics in the forum and the situation looks not so promising with HDR support on macOS.

Regrettably, Apple did not publicly document the API needed to support HDR on the Mac, so we can't do anything about it even though we'd love to. The only platform supported for HDR playback so far is Windows 10.

HDR playback is not supported on macOS. We will add it in a future release but we are far from ready.

Thanks for any help!

In VLC 3.0.16 problem seems to be fixed. Everything works smoothly.

Just tested it side by side:
